Anime: Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

This anime is just... wow. The whole show revolves around high school teacher Itoshiki Nozomu, who is always in despair and ready to die. (Although whevever something life threatening happens to him, he is very upset about almost dying.) The show is meant to be a critique on Japanese society, so a lot of jokes are hard for American viewers to understand, though there are a great deal that are funny to us as well. This anime has a bit of everything; dark humor, harem, satire, stalkers, mecha (in one episode), fanservice, awesome OPs and EDs, shout outs to other anime, randomosity, yaoi (in one episode Nozomu shows he has that appeal as well), yuri, domestic violence, you name it, it's probably been tossed into at least one episode. The artwork is absolutely beautiful, in this Otaku's opinion, with vibrantly colored backgrounds and great character designs that stay true to the original manga designs. Each characters name is a pun on Japanese words that mark their main personality trait, which is extremely exagerated for your entertainment. For example, Kiri Komori's name is a play off hikikomori, which is the Japanese word for a shut in, or a person who never leaves their house, and Kiri is a hikikomori in every sense except she never leaves the school. (Although she is often found in her teachers house as well... maybe he lives on school grounds.) Harumi Fujiyoshi's name is a play off the Japanese word Fujoshi, which is the term used by Japanese to refer to yaoi fangirls, and she writes yaoi doujinshi.

The music is top notch, with tons of great OPs and EDs to watch. The songs chosen are delightfully appropriate for this anime. The background music is gorgeous, and I've downloaded all of the soundtracks for this show. Even if you never watch the show, I encourage you to at least listen to the OP and ED songs. They are great.
